Travel Tips: What to do before your Caribbean vacation

Eight essential things to do before you travel to the Caribbean

1.  Make sure you have your passport! It typically takes 2-3 months to apply for one.  If you are short on time, do not despair.  Get an expedited passport here

2.  Make two sets of copies of all your important documents.   Passports, Social Security Card, Birth Certificate.  One set to hold in your luggage, and one to give to someone close to you by in the U.S.  In case of emergencies they can fax it to you.

3.    Pack an emergency kit-  Antibiotic ointment, Tylenol, cortisone cream, benadryl etc.  The smallest scratch, or insect bite can easily become infected.

4.  Call your bank or credit card company and let them know that you will be using your card overseas.   Most credit cards will automatically cancel or suspend activity when a card is used overseas for security purposes.

6.  Learn the islands Entry and Exit Requirements.   Every island in the Caribbean has its on entry requirements. Be aware of the island you intend to visit.

Also note, if you you lose or have your passport stolen while overseas, you must report it immediately to the police and local embassy.  Airlines can refuse to board a U.S citizen if they have insufficient proof of citizenship.

7.   Get the necessary vaccinations, and make sure you are updated on other shots, like tetanus. You can find information about country-specific vaccinations from your physician.  Bring proof of vaccination with you on the trip.
